A spherical lens is a mirror whose reflecting surface is a segment of a sphere. Unlike plane lens, which produce images of the same size, spherical lenses can magnify or reduce the size of images, and are fundamental components in many optical instruments like telescopes, shaving mirrors, and car headlights.

A cylindrical lens is an optical lens whose reflecting surface is a segment of a cylinder, unlike a spherical lens which is a segment of a sphere. This fundamental difference in shape gives cylindrical lenses unique optical properties. They do not focus light to a single point but rather manipulate light in one dimension only.

An optical prism is a solid, transparent optical element with flat, polished surfaces that refract (bend) light. Typically made from glass, plastic, or crystals, prisms are designed to manipulate light in precise ways. Unlike mirrors, which work primarily through reflection, prisms primarily exploit the phenomenon of refraction, although many also use internal reflection.

In optics, an aspherical surface (or asphere) is any surface that is not a portion of a sphere. While spherical surfaces are defined by a single radius of curvature, aspherical surfaces have a more complex profile, with a radius of curvature that changes from the center of the lens to its edge.

An optical window is a flat, optically transparent component designed to allow light to pass from one environment to another while providing a physical barrier between those two environments. Unlike lenses or prisms, optical windows are not designed to focus, disperse, or deviate light. An optical glass ball cover, more technically known as a spherical dome or glass hemisphere, is a precisely manufactured optical component with a spherical shape. It acts as a protective window, but its unique spherical geometry provides distinct advantages and challenges compared to a flat window.

An optical filter is a device that selectively transmits light of different wavelengths, often with the purpose of modifying the spectral distribution of the transmitted light. Unlike lenses (which focus light) or mirrors (which reflect it), the primary function of a filter is to accept, reject, or modify a portion of the electromagnetic spectrum based on its wavelength.

Polarization is a fundamental property of light that describes the direction of its electric field oscillations. While light waves travel in a specific direction, they can vibrate in many directions perpendicular to that path. Polarization optics is the branch of optics that deals with the manipulation, analysis, and application of this directional property of light.

A waveplate, also known as a phase retarder or simply retarder, is a fundamental component in polarization optics. Its primary function is to alter the state of polarization of light passing through it, without significantly affecting its intensity.

Unlike a polarizer, which blocks one polarization component, a waveplate works by introducing a controlled phase shift between two orthogonal polarization components of the light wave.

IR optics demand specialized materials with high transmittance in target wavelengths, low absorption, and mechanical stability. Key materials include:
Crystalline materials (germanium, silicon, zinc selenide, calcium fluoride) for lenses, prisms, and windows.
Chalcogenide glasses for cost-effective, broadband transmission in MIR.
Coatings (anti-reflective, bandpass, protective) to enhance transmittance and reduce environmental degradation.

Optical crystals are solid materials with a long-range, ordered atomic structure (a crystal lattice) that possess specific properties making them invaluable for manipulating light. Unlike optical glasses, which are amorphous (disordered), the precise and periodic arrangement of atoms in a crystal gives it unique and often anisotropic characteristics—meaning its properties can vary depending on the direction of light propagation and polarization.

These materials are fundamental building blocks in modern optics, enabling technologies from simple polarizers to complex laser systems and quantum computing experiments.

An optical grating (or diffraction grating) is a precise optical component with a periodic structure that splits and diffracts light into several beams traveling in different directions. The directions of these beams depend on the spacing of the grating and the wavelength of the light, making it one of the most powerful tools for dispersing light into its constituent spectrum.

Think of it as a super-powered prism. While a prism also separates light by wavelength (color), a grating does so with much higher resolution and in a linear fashion, making it indispensable for precise measurements of wavelength.
